Woah. Now I'm anything but a musical fan (although I don't hate it as much as most here) but this was quite a feat.

Fits perfectly and looks beautiful. Nice atmosphere also in the Latino neighborhood of Washington Heights, somewhat comparable to East Harlem.

A must-see for musical fans, I think.

(also funny how Usnavi got his name)

“Paciencia y Fe” (Patience and Trust)

After his nice comedy Crazy Rich Asians (2018), this rollicking musical by director Jon Chu about a Latino melting pot in the north of Manhattan - there where tourists hardly ever come – a wonderful surprise. It is an energetic, compelling film about disappointment and hope; about people who, through trial and error, try to make their dreams come true and find support and affection in each other. The political undertone (DACA), however modest, is a pleasant extra.

In my opinion the best musical since West Side Story (1961). I'm already putting it on my list of contenders for an award next spring.

The story of a number of members of the predominantly Latin American residents of the Washington Heights neighborhood in New York is based on the Broadway musical of the same name by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who was responsible for the enormously successful (and masterful) Hamilton, which was released last year as a theater performance and theater registration was a huge hit with audiences, viewers and critics. Chu [Crazy Rich Asians) directed this vibrant film adaptation on location and manages to impress in the first half with a few fun ideas, including a group dance in a local swimming pool. But unfortunately, the story is superficial and often very sentimental and there is little variation in the music, as if you were listening to De Beste by Frans Bauer for two hours. Not bad in itself, but after half an hour it starts to get a bit annoying. Enthusiastic performances and Miranda's inventive lyrics provide relief, but this pales next to the much more daring Hamilton and lasts at least half an hour too long.
