From the small film studio A24. A film that deals with the experiences of a South Korean immigrant family in rural Arkansas, where the family goes to work on their own piece of land.

Minari is a Korean herb that is not very fragile. It is a tough herb that copes well with soil resistance and thrives easily in close proximity to water. In the film, the grandmother of the family plants the herb by a lovely stream. More metaphorically, the herb represents the rooting of Korean immigrants abroad. Arkansas in this case.

Writer and director Lee Isaac Chung passionately talks about his characters in their pursuit of rooting. In their pursuit of happiness. An aspiration that is sometimes accompanied by anticipated but above all unforeseen resistance. It makes for an emotional film. Just beautifully emotional without exaggeration and kitschy outbursts.

The movie feels realistic. The characters are real persons. They behave as real people behave. The things that happen to them are things that you can imagine happening. The story is therefore unpredictable. In the end, it could go either way. It is the representation of real life with moments of tragedy and of happiness

The pivot in the story is the grandmother. She knows how to touch, move and change family members in her idiosyncratic and eccentric way. Especially the interaction with her grandson is wonderful. Uncomfortable, tense but also very funny, their interactions are an amusing thread in the film. Youn Yuh-jung is the name of the actress. She's great.

Minari is nowhere spectacular. The film tells about real life. A movie with heart. A movie with emotion. A movie with humour. A film with sharpness. A beautiful human film. A film in which the characters and the viewer can dream away realistically. Minari is realism with a touch of magic. It's just real.

A beautiful film that actually does everything right, but also rarely steps off the beaten track. A Korean family in the US is tested by the man's ambition: Like the American pioneering spirit, he doesn't want to spend the rest of his life sexing chicks but start a farm that will make him a successful entrepreneur his marriage is on the line. The message of the film is that it is not money that saves you but that you have to save each other (as the woman says): like minari - a plant that grows like weeds everywhere - your family is always there, which is a better foundation for happiness [ spoiler] than individual ambitions. It's the grandmother who ruins the man's business but also teaches the man the important life lesson.

All in all, the film is somewhat of a cliché, but it is beautifully and expertly packaged: there is no weak scene and the film is always 'human' and entertaining through its humor and drama.

Perseverance is perhaps the most special item in this simple but sincere film, but the impact of the entire project on each member of the family is beautifully and varied lifelike: the seriousness of setbacks, the inevitable disagreements, the humor...

Averse to violence. An enjoyable movie.
