Fine!

This somewhat absurd Comedy-Thriller and first (feature) film by Joost van Hezik looks tight and fissy, is intelligently written and also funny enough to be fun.

After having seen 5 of the 6 recent (quite sad) Telefilms, this is actually the only one of the last batch that I think is worth watching. Please see more films from this director!

This Dutch film was of course first screened at a festival in Korea, and will be given a TV release here. Yes, because of course there must be enough investments left over for all that Rom-com diarrhea in this frog country.

This print is certainly not bad, and also daring for an NL film in this day and age. Maarten is a philosophy teacher who begins to puke his entire civilian life. A typical family man, with a wife and two children, seems to strike a different blow when he witnesses a robbery in a supermarket. The robber loses his fat Dessert Eagle (one that can also supposedly talk with a call girl voice) and it is too tempting for Maarten. The thing holds so well, Maarten feels bad ass, the weapon means a lot to him, but kill someone? That does not occur to him.

But you know that this is not without problems either. The weapon appears to belong to a rather sadistic retired father Gerard (it is not clear if he is also a gangster), of which the robber happens to be the son.

In addition to Maarten, I also think Donny (father Gerard's son) gives a nice performance; with his niece little Asian friend. And of course that robbery was not done for fun or big money either. But still, I thought father Gerard (Peter Bolhuis) still stole the roles.

I also thought that part with the landlord was a keeper.

Yes, something different again. Raw setting, strong dialogues, yet a very small production.

4.0*

Maarten Moreau [Eelco Smits], a burnt-out philosophy teacher at Wageningen University, witnesses a failed robbery at a supermarket and accidentally gets hold of Donny's [Victor IJdens] weapon. He keeps this a secret from Monique [Helen Kamperveen] of the Wageningen Criminal Investigation Department, partly because this weapon gives him a sense of self-worth that changes his life forever. Van Hezik's feature debut is clearly inspired by the films of the Kaurismaki brothers and is full of images I've seen before, but can't quite place. What is missing is the understatement that makes the Finnish brothers' films so memorable. What is also missing is originality. If you don't know that everything is stolen together, you can probably appreciate this more.
