Cunningham plot
The American Merce Cunningham (1919-2009) is regarded as one of the best-known choreographers of modern dance and was an iconic figure in his field. His mid-20th century collaborations with composer John Cage (his lifelong partner) and visual artist Robert Rauschenberg were central to an era of transformation. Cunningham opposed "avant-garde" or any other label. Filmmaker Alla Kovgan gathers the latest generation of Cunningham dancers (led by Jennifer Goggans, assistant choreography director at the Merce Cunningham Dance Company) to present historic works from the Cunningham repertoire. The film focuses on three decades from 1942 to 1972, when Cunningham gained his reputation.
