Atmospheric, sometimes heartbreaking production about a Jewish girl who finds shelter with a Ukrainian farmer and his family during WWII. Director Steven Oritt is hardly tempted by excessive violence (which was ubiquitous at that time and in that place), but everyday anti-Semitism, hunger and war are nevertheless present throughout the film. The dialogues are a thing. Polish language with subtitles would have been many times stronger than the crooked English I heard under my version. Michalina Olszanska may look a bit too American, the sauerkraut is first bruised and then salted and the mowing with the scythe is mainly done by women (because of the hip work), but otherwise a fine film.

Films about the Holocaust invariably produce harrowing stories. This also applies to this film about a Jewish teenager from Poland who goes into hiding in a nearby farm in Ukraine, in an environment where anti-Semitism is rampant, not to mention the Nazis. A thoughtful film based on a true story. Newcomer Zusanna Surowy is a pleasant surprise in the title role.
