Elegant dandy.

Former businessman Friedkin's directorial debut is not one to savor. Of course, it should have been. You might have expected that with this story and with Claes Bang and Guy Pearce in the lead roles, a tasty cinematic treat would be served up. Unfortunately not. Bang, who caused a sensation last year in the beautiful but mass-forgotten miniseries Dracula from BBC & Netflix, is strong here as well. As is Pearce, who commands attention as the dignified dandy who will help solve the mystery.

And that is perhaps where the crux lies. For why does Van Meegeren receive preferential treatment from Piller? And why does the story unfold so messily? Why is it only halfway through the film that the true identity of Van Meegeren is addressed? Questions to which, unfortunately, you receive no answer, but which do arise along the way. And as a Dutch person, you have to accept the incorrect pronunciation and strange accents as part of the package anyway. The story also turns out to be inaccurate, which is why the Piller descendants are justifiably furious, but that is beside the point.

A nice piece of history about master forger Han van Meegeren. Perhaps there are slight deviations from reality here and there, possibly for dramatic effect, but I do not know the true story and therefore was not bothered by it. I found the story interesting and the cast performs adequately. Furthermore, everything looks neat, and it is also nice that it concerns a piece of Dutch history.

Boring business.

At first, it is noticeable that they try to pronounce some parts of the text correctly, but that fails so ridiculously that I wonder if it wouldn't have been better to just keep everything in English. Joe-trecht is better than Oe-trecht, so to speak.

Furthermore, it is mostly just very boring. Who would have thought that a retelling of Han van Meegeren's life could be boring? Well, he is acted reasonably well, and you can hardly say that about the rest. And why did it have to be embellished so clumsily on top of that? Reality is really far too exciting, so why not just use that version?

Shoddy work, I can't really call it anything else. A waste of time.
