Nice debut.

Visually this is a joy to watch. Glass is confident and never compromises her style. Saw that this film scored high on horror movie lists, that can create treacherous expectations. I understand the genre, but it will appeal to the drama enthusiast rather than the classic horror fanatic.

Why I still stick to only 3.5 stars, is purely because it could all be a little more solid. So it doesn't leave that impression that Glass has her talent in it. But all hope in her next feature.

3.5 stars.

This is of course not a horror at all, but a serious drama about a young nurse, mentally unstable, who struggles with her faith. She thinks God is testing her and has a plan for her. She has been discharged from the hospital and now works as a nurse for a terminal choreographer whose soul she is trying to save. I was reminded of Ulrich Seidel's films, who also incorporate elements of ultimate devotion, loneliness and uprooting in his films. Rose Glass keeps it quite aloof. You try to empathize with Maud, but it is also clear that the young woman, who at one point also looks for the debauched side of life, is already too far away and increasingly lonely. I thought that was tragic.

Not much happens in this film, except for the last twenty minutes. Then the film picks up speed. The film is set in the Scottish seaside town of Scarborough, on the east coast. It is striking how all those British seaside resorts look alike: a pier, a Ferris wheel, various arcades, cafeterias with too harsh lighting and all on the lower shore. There must have been a time when they looked warm and inviting. But when was that? And were the people happy and happy then? The perfect backdrop for this film with such a heavy subject. You already know in advance, it's not going to get any better. We take the here and there somewhat forced 'occult' events into the bargain. The ending is horrific.

Drama: I agree. But for me this was also more mystery than horror. Very well portrayed and with the right atmosphere. Without the smartphones etc. this might as well have been played 50 years ago. The accompanying music, especially the drone, could have been a little less liked. I wonder what they want to achieve with that. Music with a mysterious/religious tinge would have done just as well, even better for me. Clark and Ehle were very good in their roles. For the rest, pretty much everything has been said about this by the 4 star reviewers; very good reviews from the members here, even slightly better than the movie itself.....
