Very nice.
Every so often there is a war film that you "must see", usually it turns out to be a disappointment. Spielberg's SPR, Nolan's Dunkirk, films that didn't interest me much. So I watched this one with some reluctance, although I do hope that the visual set-up could turn this around.
And it does. Not a vain technical show, but a great way to portray a war. It's been a while since I've really been able to enjoy a longtake, lately it seems to be mainly about the length, not so much what the camera is up to in the meantime. This is one that more closely resembles the brilliant opening of To's Breaking News than the endless wandering around in Gan Bi's films.
Personally, the film could have been a bit more minimalist for me, especially in the middle part. Fewer encounters, more loneliness. Every time other people appear, the magic of the movie breaks a little bit. The after the death of Blake, the French girl, the short fight with the German soldiers, those scenes were not necessary for me. The German ghosts in the burning city were great, but the most impressive scene in the film anyway.
An experience rather than a story, that's how I prefer my films, but war films rarely dare to take that approach. After all, it is often more about sentiment and heroism, or the tragedy of the victims. Man, I prefer this approach. It's just a shame that Mendes didn't dare to take that extra step, because it doesn't happen that often that Hollywood colors outside the lines.

The camera technique is quite impressive, and the trenches look realistic. However, this is not substantive at all. First you sit for an hour watching two mediocre actors walking and talking, after that it becomes a simplistic hero story with bombastic music. The technique seems to be primarily a way of covering up the lack of content.
