This film should be required viewing for anyone who so easily proclaims that they have 'nothing to hide'. And then a mandatory reading of how that was in real life, with COINTELPRO, J. Edgar Hoover and his private police. Then of course read the bio of the 'real' Jean Seberg, including the rather suspicious circumstances in which she came to an end. Other than that I won't go into much detail - after all, politics is not appreciated on this site, although it is a bit difficult to say something about a decidedly politically motivated film. Let me just say that the underlying problem in the US is still as topical as ever.

Apart from that, it is also an educational film in the more normal sense - if only as a trigger to look up some films with the 'real' Seberg again. Quite an interesting actress, and what she has played in has often become classics - although in a few cases that is much later. Who knows what could have grown out of her without all the evil input from Hoover and his strong arm.

For Stewart, Andrews might have been better off finding someone else. She definitely doesn't fit the role for me, not from style of play and not from looks - to the point where it just becomes implausible, you don't see Seberg but Stewart in that role. Shame. And the roles of Jack O'Connel and Qualley may have been played a bit better, but story-wise a bit more unbelievable. Perhaps projected just a little too much into the present day and spruced up by Hollywood standards.

Still, it's certainly not bad. And the message does deserve some attention, besides just not to forget Seberg.

A biopic about Jean Seberg that is at least interesting enough to tell. The film mainly focuses on the late 1960s when she interferes with the Black Panther party. She became a star mainly in France and not that there was no racism there, but no explicit racial segregation as in the US. She makes her voice heard.

How the real Seberg fared I cannot estimate. It will be a combination of personal problems, the government's paranoia that likes to hunt anyone with progressive thoughts, and the lack of strong movie roles in Hollywood. The film mainly presents a representation of the facts with fortunately a very good Kristen Stewart in the title role. There is also nothing to criticize about the setting. But otherwise it is not that special and it follows the rules of a biopic nicely. It remains rather docile around the activism, around the scandal of the government wiretapping her and also not very far-reaching about her personal fall into depression.

A pleasant film, but mainly because of what this actress has been through and Stewart helps keep that film straight. The movie itself never really gets wild.

The advantage of true stories is that you can look up the main character's Wikipedia page for some more background information afterwards. The story is a bit messy, seems a bit rushed at times. The final scene, however, where Jean Seberg is sitting at the bar, is rock solid, thanks mainly to great acting from Kristen Stewart. She carries the film completely.
