Film that captivates you from start to finish.

A father-son relationship with the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the historical history and religious experience as a background

Several very strong scenes, such as this one with the wife of the fallen Nazim and his father, the promise that Mustafa elicits from a woman he did not treat correctly in the past, the final scene (what a pity that what Alim exclaims was not subtitled).

Stunningly good camera work.

I'm a little less enthusiastic than the opinions above. I thought it was mostly a long-winded movie. A fuzzy movie too. As far as I can tell we are following two Crimean Tatars. The Crimean Tatars are a Turkic ethnic group and are largely Sunni Muslims. About 250,000 Crimean Tatars live in Crimea. Another 150,000 live in exile. From that context I can better understand the film and the motives of the father/son.

Due to the current war conflict between Russia and Ukraine and the resulting geographical knowledge, you can place a number of things better. Places like Zaporizhia, Cherson or Mariopol are no longer unknown. Only I wish to see a bit more of the area in a road movie and that was all in all limited.

The strongest or one of the better scenes was indeed the visit to Nazim's widow. She didn't get much input. All nicely cast in form, but I missed some explanation and a somewhat deeper plot.

Mustafa [Akhtem Seitablaev] comes to Kyiv to transport the body of his other son Nazim [Anatoliy Marempolkiy] with his son Alim [Remzi Bilyalov] to Russian-occupied Crimea, where Nazim's mother is buried. Mustafa ignores the protests of Nazim's fiancée [Dariya Barikhashvili] and that does not help the relationship between father and son. During the long journey (with the body in the trunk), Mustafa and Alim encounter various obstacles and their mutual understanding changes. Solid, but certainly not sensational, road movie won quite a few prizes in its own country, Ukraine, and could also count on international support, including at the Cannes film festival. Unfortunately, not because it is a good film, but because it is about the relationship between Crimea and the rest of Ukraine and therefore fitted in with the social debate.
