Last Rites plot

"Passion. Betrayal. Revenge."

Michael Pace (Berenger) is a young Italian priest in New York who protects a beautiful Mexican Angela (Zuniga) from the mafia. That can happen. It becomes unlikely when his father turns out to be the mob boss and his sister the targeted assassin. If Michael also develops debauched feelings for Angela, the credibility is definitely over.

Donald P. Bellisario.

The famous director and producer, whom we all know by name from Magnum, PI—the original series, that is—has directed a single feature film. This one. Apparently, that didn't go down very well, and perhaps that was largely due to the rather venomous criticism. A priest running off with a young woman of questionable morals, unlikely—that anyone would take issue with that, I mean, of course.

While it is for the most part a pretty great film, and not least because of the role of the beautiful, the super-beautiful Daphne Zuniga, who clearly feels just as comfortable as a femme fatale as she does in her graceful and flawless skin. It is only in the last few minutes that the 'oh yes' feeling really takes over, that just one rabbit too many is pulled out of the hat. A shame, but to dismiss the film as the worst film of 1988 based on that, as rogerebert apparently did? That is rather weak and lazy. Just like the plot description here.

Yes, Zuniga does mess up the key scene a bit. A slip-up by Donald P, who should have intervened, either during filming or in the editing. And likewise with the story. But on the other hand, the interplay of seduction and tension between Berenger and Zuniga is completely convincing—as the taxi driver puts it: put me in the shower with her and all my ailments are forgotten. Including Catholicism, he could perhaps have added.

A somewhat unjustly forgotten film, that is. I wouldn't exactly call it a 'gem', but it's not something to pass up either. There are so many worse films—in fact, dozens are made every day that are much, much worse. And virtually none of them possess the historical value of this film—Donald P, Daphne, and Tom Berenger.
