Nice crime film, with a strong start. Although the crime is hard to find in terms of action. Robinson gives a good performance as a 'big boss', who is sent to Alcatraz and ends up behind bars. He resembles Humphrey Bogart in his manner and speech.
His gullible (but not naive) wife is left alone and, over time, wishes for her son to have a normal upbringing. Stewart slowly comes into the picture as the stepfather of 'Little Joe', but the child himself doesn't know any better. As the film progresses, Stewart takes on a more prominent role, but there remains a great variety in scenes between Stewart and Robinson. When the big boss is finally released, the question is whether he can return to his old status and take revenge on everyone who caused him trouble. Provisional ****

Ok, which weirdos are responsible for this sky-high average? It's all quite funny, but what excruciatingly boring non-cinema, incredibly static, without the slightest dynamism or eloquence. It's a bit reminiscent of that snippy epilogue from Little Caesar, but drawn out over a feature-length film. Edward G. Robinson who is very busy and complains about everything: "they think they can kill me, but I'll show them something again!!!" etc... And then that boy scouts son of his, hahaha. Seemed more like a mentally challenged 17 year old than a child. Jimmy Stewart's most colorless role ever. I'm slowly starting to suspect that Edward Ludwig is not as great an author as is always claimed...

what starts as a kind of standard mediocre crime story gradually develops into a strong drama

with various plot developments and a main character who remains fascinating through personal changes

and the sympathy you as a viewer gradually develop for him, which is well done.
