Nieuwe Gronden plot

In the upper half of the Netherlands lies the Zuiderzee, between Friesland and Amsterdam, which is closed by the Afsluitdijk. Within this dam a lake will be created in which 225,000 hectares of land will be reclaimed by the construction of four polders. The cheerful idyll is disturbed by workers being laid off and grain being dumped into the sea: there is too much grain and too little work. What is the use of land reclamation if the economic crisis is destroying food all over the world?
