"The Academy Award Winning Sensation!"

One morning, on his way to school, little boy Pascal discovers a large red balloon hanging from a lamppost not far from a staircase in the Parisian district of Ménilmontant. Pascal releases the balloon and takes it to school. On the way home, he tries to protect the balloon from the rain. At home, his mother forbids him to keep the balloon in his room. But the balloon does not fly away: it hangs in front of the window until Pascal can grab it again. The balloon is from now on Pascal's companion and playmate, and never leaves his side.

Charming video.

Pascal is worried about his balloon. He protects it from the rain, takes it home...and is grateful for it.

Friendship, gratitude, loyalty and solidarity take precedence, especially when others feel the need to disrupt the relationship between the two, the bond proves stronger than ever.

It may be true that the film is no longer as inventive in the second half, but it remains an enjoyable experience nonetheless.

The red balloon stands out against its surroundings because almost everything in the background is gray or brown. Northeast Paris gives a bleak impression, with drizzly weather and buildings in poor condition. The church and the apartment building still stand; most of the other buildings have been demolished.

The balloon has human qualities. It sides with the boy and against the headmaster. There are comic and tragic moments. It's a symbol of hope at a time when France needed to be rebuilt. Shortly before the end, three balloons float in the order bleu, blanc et rouge. Suddenly, there's a clear blue sky. It begins as a childish fantasy but grows into a surreal parable about friendship, death, and resurrection. Such gems should be made more often.

Brilliant and inspiring. There's nothing wrong with this fantasy about the friendship between a boy and a red balloon. It's a visual spectacle, beautifully executed. Something as simple as a red balloon commands attention everywhere. People sometimes look surprised, which makes me wonder how much improvisation went into it. It's no coincidence that the balloon stands out starkly against the somewhat gloomy backdrop, as Dievegge rightly notes. The balloon is transformed into something "living" and feelings are attributed to it (loyalty, fear). The way they do that is the strength of this short film. Just consider how they animated this: today, filmmakers would take the easy way out and use a digital balloon. And the ending, so incredibly beautiful, grander than I expected. PS: Must go in tip 250!
