Secrets in the Hot Spring plot
Twenty years old and still a high school student, Hsiao-chin is a good-for-nothing with no future. During the Christmas holidays, he is tricked by his grandparents and has to visit the family hotel that he will one day have to take over. As if bringing two wacky classmates wasn't enough, things get out of hand for these night owls when they encounter the supernatural.

Beforehand I did not expect to be dealing with such a childish horror film, but after some time I fortunately started to get used to it. This is partly due to Hui's enthusiastic direction, which goes a long way. However, on the other hand, the constant overacting and the constant cutting of potentially exciting scenes always works against the whole. The film's editing is also disappointing, because Hui cuts away every time a cinematographically consistent scene is built up. The corny humor is quite infectious left and right and because the film runs so smoothly I could easily have given it a pass, but the very mediocre denouement and suddenly over-sentimental relationship building during the final phase deprive the film of such a grade. I think that Hui as a director should do much more mature work, because this film is difficult to categorize due to all the intrusive humor. There is plenty of entertainment, just not enough focus in my opinion.
