Harriet plot

"Be free or die"

The film tells the life story of Harriet Tubman. In the nineteenth century, she strives to abolish slavery. She herself was also a slave for many years until she managed to escape in 1849. From that moment on, she helps hundreds of fellow sufferers to escape from the South via the so-called smuggling routes, better known as the Underground Railroad.

Harriet Tubman's life story deserves much better editing and production than this bland, under-acted B-movie worth watching for Cynthia Erivo's worthy portrayal in the title role alone. Born into slavery as Minty, she decides to take matters into her own hands when her owner Gideon Brodess [Joe Alwyn] refuses to fulfill a family promise that would release Minty's mother [Vanessa Bell Calloway] and her entire family from slavery. Not only does Minty manage to escape, she also decides to free her entire family, building a network that would allow her to free many other slaves and earn the nickname 'Moses'.

This story of a free-spirited black female leader - in 1863 she led a military unit into battle against the Confederates - is very compelling on paper and could have been a strong combination of drama, suspense and politics, but Kasi Lemmons - whose credit as co -screenwriter emphasizes how important this project was to her personally - it would have been wise to hand over the direction to someone who could have brought together the various fascinating elements of Harriet Tubman's life, her struggles and her perilous, heroic deeds much better.

The life of one of the most important women in American history. Sad that it took so long for a film to be made about this. The result has become a film that mainly focuses on Harriet as a person and does not want to turn it into a hero film or anything like that. Her actions are enough to impress. At the same time, that sometimes makes for a lesser film, because it is not always as strong outside of Cynthia Erivo as Harriet. The cast is not well known. The makers had to make do with a budget of 17 million dollars. Other biopics of that year like Bohemian Rhapsody or Rocketman had a budget of 40-50 million. And double again for Ford vs Ferrari. A film like this could use a little more money.

The film itself is beautiful, Harriet's life is of course fascinating enough and Cynthia Erivo is suitable for this role. She is also central and not the white man, as is often the case in these kinds of films. But it never really gets big or impressive, it's certainly not an epic movie. Without Erivo this might have been forgotten. Too bad, because the character deserves better.

Fascinating subject, I think I only learned something about Tubman from time to time. Visually, it's also a great movie.

It's just a pity that a large part of the story is so simplistic and black and white (pun not intended). It sometimes seemed as if they wanted to make Tubman even bigger than she already is, but that doesn't seem necessary to me. All a bit too 'Hollywood inspirational', like it was made for the school class or something.

This could have been tackled in a much more ambitious and nuanced way.
