L'Adieu à la Nuit plot

Muriel is a horse breeder and co-manager of an almond orchard. She waits for her grandson, Alex, to say goodbye to her before flying to Canada, where he has found a job. Alex is in love with Lila, his childhood friend and they have big plans, but very quickly Muriel realizes that something is wrong: it is not to Canada that Alex is planning to leave, but to Syria.

Too bad "plot" above exposes the essence of the film.
Decent film. It is nice that Muriel is only concerned about her grandson and thinks that others will follow her in this.
The surprising but clever ending shows a deeply disappointed woman who had not realized that her grandson had really done something wrong.

Perhaps a somewhat late film about a somewhat outmoded subject, but on the other hand the fairly pure treatment also does some good. And certainly when you consider how many parallels there are between the supporters of the extreme right and IS, then the film becomes a lot more compelling. Perhaps both of these problems would be solved quickly if both groups would realize that.

Mottet Klein and Amamra are never sympathetic in the story - and Amamra is also somewhat forgotten, although that can perhaps be explained in the story. Deneuve fortunately shows very little of her star status, which was one of the concerns I had about the film beforehand.
