Leaving Neverland plot

The documentary Leaving Neverland focuses on two men who say they have been abused for a long time by the pop star Michael Jackson who died in 2009. The documentary describes how 'The King of Pop' entered into long-term relationships with two boys, aged 7 and 10 at the time, and their families while he was at the peak of his fame. The two are now both in their thirties and claim that they were sexually abused by the singer. In the documentary they reveal how they have learned to live with this.

I can't do much with this. Michael Jackson was a special brush and that he was guilty of dirty business is very likely, but this is just pure one-way traffic. Sitting way too long.

Difficult to assess.

This film is even more captivating because of the opponents. You see how strange fans are, you see how articles like in that Forbes piece below (writer has not seen the documentary) or the thread of Donkerwoud's Twitter with vaguely photoshopped evidence, things that are just highlighted in the documentary, that Culkin and Brett have always said not to have been abused is just at the end of part 1. Also Safechuck's mother knew because he said at the second trial that MJ was not a good man that something was wrong. So timeline is just right. It's funny how you can be such a fan of someone you don't really know. That could be a documentary in itself.

But this is all outside of this documentary. It is certainly one-sided. I don't think consciously. The MJ side of course didn't want to cooperate. I don't know if it made much sense either. You have 1 argument from the MJ side and that is that they are money wolves. With four children who tell the same story, I dare to question that argument, but you don't know 100 percent for sure. I found the men convincing. But especially, as Chefkes says below, I found it fascinating how people want to escape from ordinary life.

Furthermore, the argument what does it matter he has been dead for 10 years. You hear that argument a lot and I disagree with it. You are damaged as a person and the masses do have an opinion about you. I understand that you still want to share your story about this and it can also help others. Because idolizing a star is never healthy and if that changes even a bit with a documentary like this, that's progress.

3 stars.

"Let me be honest: this documentary should never have been made. Michael Jackson has been charged three times with sexual abuse but never convicted: the first time Jackson settled, the second time he was acquitted and the third time the judge dismissed the charges because the case was time-barred.The Jackson family is absolutely right that this film is completely one-sided and I suspect HBO is going to be in serious trouble.

The fact that Jackson's guilt has never been proven casts a huge shadow over this one-sided account in which two alleged victims of Michael Jackson tell their stories. The story of the impact that Jackson's alleged sexual abuse had and continues to have on top choreographer Wade Robson and aspiring filmmaker Jimmy Safechuck and their family (perhaps) provides new insights into its consequences. But because Jackson is formally innocent, that relevant theme is snowed under in a (completely understandable) discussion about that question of guilt.

Hopefully HBO already has plans for a rematch in the form of a documentary about Bill Cosby, an American icon who has been convicted of sexual abuse. Although you have to wonder if they can still afford that after paying the Jacksons $100 million for “a one-sided marathon of unvetted propaganda to shamelessly exploit an innocent man no longer here to defend himself”.

Whether you believe Robson and Safechuck or not, Michael Jackson is innocent before the law. And no one is above the law, not even HBO.
