A fine film that starts a bit rippling but slowly but surely gets a face.

Once daddy is gone, the kids and their stepmother are left behind and there is a negative atmosphere. Once things get a little better between the three, a mysterious tension builds in the lodge with no one trusting the other until they learn that something horrific may be happening. Are the fuses blowing or are they hallucinating?

Or, can they not even hallucinate anymore? A great film that we rate with a 7+.

Still expected a little more.

Goodbye Mommy was a promising debut, The Field Guide to Evil didn't disappoint me either. In itself, this film also remains recognizable work by the duo, but I found it all a little less tight. Maybe because the style lacks some originality in the meantime, or because they have settled too much in the arthouse/horror style that has been popping up more often lately.

Visually it's nice, but for a film like this it could be just a little bit more. Tightly framed, now and then a shot that stands out, but also a fair amount of average work that looks a bit overcast. I'm not a fan of the soundtrack either. Some plucking at a violin should bring extra tension, but there too the same criticism. Nothing wrong with a minimalist score, but then it just has to be better.

Acting is good, in terms of set-up also quite interesting, although I also thought that he could have been a little more subtle. For example, the drama is very thick (a cult survivor has to watch out for two children whose mother committed suicide because their father ran off with her) and the children's games very smart. To be honest, they didn't seem old enough to fake a hanging or to fake a front page of a newspaper.

It's often just not enough, which is a shame because the talent is clearly there. Now I thought it was just a bit too much drama, a bit too little successful horror. But it's not bad, especially not for those who like slow burners.

3.0*

Quite a nice thriller. It's actually not scary. You often see spaces, as if you were looking through a diorama. That's nice done. Furthermore, the kids play well and there is a 'creepy' atmosphere, but not very intense. It also sometimes goes a bit too slow. The twist towards the end is nicely done. The kids have come up with this genius, but it's not worked out very well. I think the ending is too easy to open. Not satisfactory. The kids are pretty smart all the time and are easily persuaded, or so it seems.
