The half-star is for a fairly successful bathroom sequence - part of which can be seen in the trailer - but this is a film with no original ideas. Not entirely surprising since producer James Wan actually does nothing but milk a few successful formulas to the bone. Waving curtains, bobbing rocking horses, a priest and a bit of Mexican folklore: the main haunted house clichés are all covered, even if this is not really a haunted house movie. If anything scares you, it's mainly a lot of noise and not so much what you see - or what happens. Money in the drawer for James Wan, who is far from done repeating himself. Anyway, as long as there are people who are warm to this kind of nonsense, you can hardly blame him from a business point of view.

Wan horror.

It's been clear for a while that the stretch is a bit out of these kinds of movies. As long as they still attract enough people to the cinema it will go on for a while, but I don't think we will see layers of films from the Wan stable for another five years. Not a problem in itself.

It seems clear to me that you can expect jump scares, so it's up to Chaves to shape them properly. Unfortunately, he can't. The ghost is quickly revealed and in terms of structure it never really gets exciting. It's mostly loud and predictable.

Unfortunately, Mexican lore doesn't add much either. Little bit of background in Mexico, otherwise it's a classic ghost doing classic ghost stuff. Floating fast, shouting loudly and throwing people around. Fortunately, the budget is good, so that a bit of atmosphere can still be extracted from the setting and cinematography, but that's about it.

They remain easy bios movies, I still don't think it's really bad, but the stretch is just a bit off. Time to put this kind of horror away again, so that some remakes can be made within 20 years or so.

2.5*

Congratulations James Wan, you have the pleasure of receiving my first 1. Three times hurrah.

This movie is set in the Conjuring Universe, so I didn't go into it with much hope. And good too.

The film has seriously nothing but nothing to say and constantly adheres to painfully bad jumpscares, clichés and very mediocre acting.

Now I think the first Conjuring movie is really good and the Annabelle franchise, wherever reference is made in this movie, is also okay, but the rest is really a sad intention that was made purely for people who watch a horror movie now and then and shit their entire underpants with this, but the horror fans see right through this. At least, it seems to me.

The fact that this film has grossed more than 100 million dollars also says for the kind of people this film was made for.

I love that this is part of the Conjuring Universe, as this is a common folk tale told in Latin American households. I know we used it to test how brave other kids were, as there were horrible stories of people seeing her face and getting scratched in the bathrooms.

I really enjoyed this telling of the story as it was terrifying and had scary jump moments to it.

Great cast, with semi-decent facial expressions they were able to carry throughout the film
