After Bobby Fischer defeated Boris Spasski at the World Chess Championship in 1972, the Soviets were eager to regain the title through the efforts of Anatoli Karpov, a staunch member of the Communist Party. Fischer refused to defend his title and so Karpov won. His first defense of the title was against Viktor Korchnoi, a critic of the Soviet regime and known defector since 1976. As the rivals settle their battle on the chessboard, a psychological war rages behind the scenes involving KGB agents, death threats, coded yogurt and a stranger. sect against whom a charge was made for murder.
