In 1862, wealthy pilot Amelia Wren and ambitious scientist James Glaisher decide to conduct research using their hot air balloon. They want to fly as high as possible, higher than all those who have gone before them in history. This journey is certainly not without danger and the duo find themselves in a fight to the death. The film scores reasonably well with the critics, but the audience doesn't like it because the audience scores are low and the film doesn't seem to be in theaters for long. I have no idea why visitors don't like the film because it is not a difficult film, on the contrary: it is a very simple but stunning and exciting adventure film, a kind of Gravity (2013) - MovieMeter.nl – which was a cinema hit – high in the air instead of in space, which is also a kind of Free Solo (2018) - MovieMeter.nl-excitement with all the acrobatics 10,000 meters above the ground (because of course our heroes have to think of and do the most spectacular things to get into the most hopeless situations again and again). to crawl through the eye of the needle).
In any case, the images are beautiful and the adventures breathtaking. The backstories or development of characters and scientific breakthroughs pale in comparison, but Felicity Jones brings a nice energy and the film even has some depth in its lessons about what is important, which according to the film is not (just) Newton's theoretical perspective but beauty and the world change. Now that the film is about the beginning of the modern science of weather, I expected the film to say something about the current climate crisis or that the film was made for that reason, but there appears to be nothing that is not necessary.
In short, it's just a great film that really deserves more visitors. However, the images are so spectacular that foreign critics emphasize that this film should be viewed on the largest screen, while in the Netherlands the film only seems to be shown on the smallest arthouse screens. That's too bad.

Oh, is credibility that important in this case? It is not an autobiographical film adaptation and this film does not aim for historical accuracy. It's purely about entertainment and the Aeronauts succeeds in that with flying colours. Yes, the plot is a bit thin and some flashbacks are thrown in here and there to make it an acceptable running time. You've also seen dozens of films like this, but set at sea or in space. Now it is taking place in the air with the associated problems.
Still, the film looks phenomenal. The moments in the hot air balloon look phenomenal and the many cloud formations are a feast for the eyes. The film proves that it works well because I occasionally had to look away because they were doing strange antics at a great height. The film is supported by the always charming Felicity Jones and the strong Eddie Redmayne (who also played together in the Theory of Everything), who again have good chemistry together.

Beautifully made adventure film set in Victorian times. A scientist goes to higher realms with an experienced balloonist. The challenge is to get as high as possible with the balloon to collect important scientific data. The balloon goes higher and higher into the air and with it the danger also increases.... In any case, it produces breathtaking images.
