Der Vorname plot

It could have been a wonderful dinner, to which Stephan and his wife Elisabeth had invited several acquaintances. But when Thomas announces that he and his pregnant girlfriend Anna want to call their son Adolf, the hosts and the family friend René are less thrilled at the aperitif. They end up throwing truths in each other's faces that would have been better left unspoken in favor of harmonious togetherness. Strong egos collide, vanities are played off against each other and the evening escalates into an unpleasant game in which the worst childhood sins and the greatest secrets of all guests are happily served.

It was supposed to be a nice dinner. That was certainly the intention when the married couple Stephan and Elisabeth invited her brother Thomas, his pregnant wife Anna and family friend René for a pleasant get-together. Things get messy when the conversation turns to the unborn son. The announcement to saddle the child with the name Adolf changes the mood and other dormant irritations and conflicts come to the surface and things escalate violently.

The film is the remake of the French film Le Prénom (2012) in which the unborn son is given the name Adolphe. I haven't seen the original. I thought the German version was nicer. After all, naming your child Adolf in Germany is much more stressful than in France. Can you even give your child the dictator's name in Germany? According to the movie it is allowed. But yeah. Then again. Everything that is permitted is also morally permitted. The issue leads to heated arguments in the film. And those arguments form the basis for a fun, humorous film.

In the fire of the conflictual framework named Adolf, secrets are betrayed, and opinions are not hidden. Each character gets his share. Painful things are hidden behind arrogant behavior and appearances. The film Le Prenom (and this one too) is based on a play. This means that with just a few rooms in a house, there is little variation in locations. No optical distraction. It has to come from the characters and their dialogue. The dialogues are biting, witty, funny. The characters are not very subtly colored, but they perform well in the increasingly less subtle game of accusations that is played heatedly. Moreover, the acting is excellent. That also makes a difference. Der Vorname is a nice film.
