Desenterrando Sad Hill plot

"The film was over. The story had only started."

In October 2015, a group of fans of the film 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly' visited the location of the film's final scene in Burgos. The Spanish army had created a cemetery there with 5000 tombstones. After the shooting of the film, the place had been left alone for 49 years and everything was overgrown by nature. The group began to remove and dig the vegetation, and parts of 'Sad Hill Cemetery' soon reappeared. The news spread like wildfire and volunteers from all over Europe came to help reconstruct this place.

Nice doc.

An example for a lot of other film documentaries. I really have nothing to do with Leone's westerns, but this documentary creates a beautiful picture, on the one hand of the love of the fans, and on the other hand of the shooting of the film itself.

There is of course no room for any criticism, but you shouldn't expect that. What I did think was a shame is that people occasionally stuck to the circle of interviewees a bit too slavishly. Especially when it came to the fandom itself, I found responses from Hetfield or Dante somewhat inappropriate. Not exactly people who speak from any real knowledge.

But otherwise interesting. Beautifully depicted, the company of the Spanish fans was a nice central point to hang everything else on and the stories about the production were beautifully woven in. As a non-fan you can still enjoy this documentary. The film itself will not be any better, but the cult surrounding it is a bit clearer now.

The idea and ultimately the execution of reconstructing the entire cemetery from 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly'. Awesome. And especially what this has meant for the group. Beautiful, beautiful beautiful. Beautiful to see. A documentary that constantly gave me goosebumps and at the end I saw with tears in my eyes how this was really directed into a beautiful whole. Hats off.

In 1966, Sergio Leone filmed the climax of The Good, The Bad And The Ugly in Valle de Mirandilla. Metallica has been using Ennio Morricone's famous accompanying music to open their concerts for 30 years and many local residents contributed to the film as crew members or extras. The death of Eli Wallach in 2014 prompted a few friends to gather at the location where the duel between 'The Good' [Clint Eastwood], 'The Bad' [Lee van Cleef] and 'The Ugly [Eli Wallach] to organize a commemoration. The response was greater than expected and that gave the men the idea to reconstruct the set (a circle of sand surrounded by thousands of graves) for the 50th anniversary and show the film there. De Oliveira interviews cast and crew members from the past and participants in the reconstruction to find out what inspires people to take on a project like this. An entertaining and interesting premise, but De Oliveira's appears not to have adopted any of Leone's creativity. The direction is colorless, the editing is unimaginative and there is no dramatic denouement - even though the initiators apparently think otherwise.
