Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison all died aged 27 between 1969 and 1971. At the time, it all seemed a coincidence, but it wasn't until Kurt Cobain's death, about two and a half decades later, that that the idea of a "27 Club" surfaced in public perception, resurrected with the death of Amy Winehouse in 2011. Through interviews with people they knew, such as music stars, critics and medical experts, those who died at 27 are examined with the goal of finding answers. A documentary about the club of 27, but not much is said at all. Unfortunately, it is not much more than highlighting 6 artists and briefly telling their story. The production itself also resembles a TV doc.
Still a well-known fact that could easily have been done more with. Napier-Bell briefly tries to find the common denominator, but does not get any further than "a difficult childhood that hindered me from success". Well, I can come up with that myself, I don't need a documentary like this for that.
What remains are 6 stories, some of which I already knew. There is also hardly time to say anything serious because if you have to divide the playing time by 6 there is simply not much left. They are all very well-known artists, anyone who wants to know more about these people would be better off simply choosing a different documentary per artist. I suspect that it will also be about their suicide.

Weak documentary.
It brings a group of people together, but fails to provide the individual segments with any color or depth. If you want to find out more about the individual musicians, you've come to the wrong place.
It mainly illustrates the arbitrariness with which we have brought this group together. Their age plus some predictable factors such as a troubled youth, struggling with addiction and suffering from fame; Not only is it a shaky common denominator, it also excludes many musicians with a similar tragic story. A more critical position on the influence and responsibility of the industry, the media or the (idolization by) fans would even give us more food for thought.
A lazily put together work that does little justice to the tragedy or influence of the individual artists. 1.5*

As a great music fan, I also became fascinated by "The 27 Club." I had hoped that this documentary would provide a beautiful and interesting representation, but unfortunately that does not appear to be the case. It's all quite superficial, and the background music during the interviews is incredibly annoying. The rise and fall of major stars such as Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Amy Winehouse are explained at a lightning pace. This without any contribution from their music. In addition, the mythology of "The 27 Club" is not delved into. The "experts" also lack a good dose of musical history. Nirvana's "Nevermind" may be their biggest album, but they undoubtedly scored more than one hit. I think any stand-alone documentary of these greats would do better justice.
