Very nice.

Such a film that manages to be original within a very limited niche. It is not a film from which you should expect something completely new or original, on the other hand Rugna has done its very best not to just put the classic haunted house nonsense through the mangle.

A scene with the dead son is an ideal example of this. Not earth-shattering, but the way it's executed is just very effective and creepy. Just like the Botet-esque monster. Seen so often in the meantime, but something lifts it above the average, making those scenes effective again.

Creature design is just very good, not very subtle but still good use of the soundtrack, camera work in order and a film that is just old-fashioned exciting. In between the horror the level is a bit lower and those transitions are sometimes a bit abrupt, but there is really enough to experience. Definitely recommended for fans of the genre.

3.5*

A fine genre film and at the same time a fine example of how South American productions within this genre have acquired an (even) clearer face in recent years. Because although the fact is anything but original, it convincingly captures its moments. Spanish-language horror has a reputation for being very floaty and seeking the atmosphere more in the slow tempo. Argentine productions on the other hand are generally (with only 12 titles on the counter for me, from the 90s) a lot more direct in their approach. The scares don't lie here either; visually a lot of rotting misery. These kinds of films (of this production quality and with a bit of individuality) are rare and I can hardly imagine that genre fans are not enthusiastic about this.

Something else to get excited about; on the official site of Demian Rugna all his films can be found for free. I am curious about The Last Gateway (2007) and Malditos Sean! (2011) . Usually those kinds of obscure/past films are impossible to find, so this is a golden move from Rugna.

Nice Pulp Fiction-esque puzzle that brings in answers to the paranormal conundrum through different perspectives in time and place. Breaking the continuity also adds to the horror that not one household has to deal with supernatural phenomena, but that something is spreading like an inkblot across a neighborhood community. Local residents, police inspectors and scientists alike try to give meaning to the unnatural forces they have seen at work. Is it personal madness or mass hysteria, or is it really a paranormal entity? It is a pity that 'Aterrados' (2017) is rather unbalanced in tone. One minute chillingly good horror with solid creature design and effective scare effects, the next shitty interludes with pseudoscientists running off with weird machines and cryptic spells. Then stumble from one stupid decision to another. On top of that, the big reveal turns out to be quite an anticlimax, as the film put all its cards on the table too early.
