San Junipero plot

"Heaven Is A Place On Earth."

It's 1987. Yorkie, a shy young woman, and Kelly, a spontaneously cheerful girl, meet while going out in San Junipero - a lively town on the coast. Together they form a powerful bond that seems to defy the laws of space and time.

“What are you doing?”

“I'm regarding you.”

Superb Black Mirror episode. San Junipero is sci-fi with a heart, and actresses Mbatha-Raw and Davis have an irresistible chemistry from the first scene. The concept of San Junipero is intriguing and the story makes you think, which is usually an important prerequisite for a strong sci-fi film. With a delicious nostalgic 80s/90s sauce poured over it.

Again, temperance trumps.

The chat room concept is far from new or refreshing, but the interpretation on the dramatic side is. Not a bad starting point in itself, but the execution is again very average. These videos only last an hour, but the countdown usually starts halfway through.

San Junipero always shows his cards a little too early. One way or another you feel the reveals coming and the film never manages to surprise you. Also, the drama really doesn't catch on. Poor acting, poorly portrayed.

The retro nonsense doesn't make it any better either. Another stupid excuse to score some easy retro points, not even original choices in terms of references. Unfortunately, it falls within the expectations of these videos. Good intentions probably, but it comes out so meager.

Hallucinating how Yorkie (Mackenzie Davis) walks for minutes through San Junipero, where the eighties, like a nostalgic retro dream, are more youthful and carefree than anywhere else in the world. How the wallflower with jam jar glasses and concealing clothes is drawn to that sparkling Kelly (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) with her hedonistic, no-nonsense lifestyle. You can guess the twist, but because of the slow pace and that hyper-realistic fantasy atmosphere, I was also drawn into this lesbian love affair. Unlike in most episodes of Black Mirror (where a warning tone often sounds), technology is not necessarily the enemy here, but also a barrel full of unprecedented possibilities. It is up to the viewer whether the concept of San Junipero is a nightmare or a heaven created by humans.
