“I'm stuck here, and the girl that I love is dating someone else. Is that what you're saying?”

“Yeah. Story of my life.”

Friendly. Another Groundhog Day variant, and another movie that can't stand in the shadow of this classic. But as a standalone film, When We First Met is quite entertaining, and the actors are solid. Devine can be a pain in the ass sometimes, but more often than not I can just laugh at him. No great humor, but sometimes I just feel like a lame comedy with some romance and a sentimental ending.

And I thought I'd never say it, but Alexandra Daddario is surpassed in cuteness by Shelley Hennig. That could also be because Hennig is clearly a better actress than Daddario, and I have a soft spot for beer- and shot-drinking women in basketball jerseys. It will be the latter.

Adam Devine and Daddario team up in a Groundhog-esque romcom, what's not to like? Very sympathetic, sweet and above all simple flick with light humor. Devine remains a bit love it or hate it for many... in my case (especially thanks to Workaholics) I like to see this type of comedy actor, somewhat in the same box as Andy Samberg. Sandel's The DUFF (2015) was also surprisingly fun (in a similar way), so that offers some perspective for Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween (2018) .

Watched because the movie is set in New Orleans, where I lived for a while. The film certainly shows some of the city, but it feels like more could have been done. Like Hennig's character walking around in a Lakers jersey. Of course, that should have been a Pelicans shirt. Details like this could have made it feel more like it's set in New Orleans rather than being shot in New Orleans.

The plot is reminiscent of Groundhog Day, but fortunately has its own character; reliving the same day is not quite the same. I know DeVine from Modern Family, where I found his character quite annoying. Here his character isn't much different, sometimes a bit over the top, but there are some nice moments, especially when he's drunk.

All in all reasonable, but more had been put in than taken out. 2.5*.
