Josie plot

"Secrets will come to light."

Hank leads a drab life in a small-town motel, spending his days as a fisherman and high school parking attendant. He harbors demons from his past, avoiding personal contact with his neighbors as much as possible, but that changes when 21-year-old Josie rents a room at the same motel. The two seem to get along well, but when Josie's classmate (and Hank's teaser) Marcus shows his interest in Josie, tensions rise.

A well-directed psychological drama in which the withdrawn Hank [Dylan McDermott], a man wrestling with demons from his past, gradually comes out of his shell when 21-year-old Josie [Sophie Turner] moves into the same motel. A friendship develops, but is put under pressure when Marcus [Jack Kilmer], a classmate of Josie's who regularly makes Hank's life miserable, tries to win Josie over.

It begins as a romantic drama, but thanks in part to Raney Shockne's sparse yet effective musical score, you sense a dark twist looming. Despite the excellent acting of McDermott and Turner, the final twist is surprising and even shocking, but unconvincing because it leaves too many logical questions unanswered. This finale therefore does the film more harm than good, which up until that point has been extremely intriguing and captivating.

A pleasantly slow story told in beautiful, vibrant colors, starring the not-quite-sympathetic McDermott and the not-quite-beautiful but very blonde Turner. The story starts off quite mysteriously, but doesn't quite manage to sustain it, and from there on, it has to remain suspenseful, as you wonder how it will end.

It's a shame the story isn't told a bit more strongly, the cast is quite good, and so is the crew - I especially liked the visuals.

Sophie Turner (Games of Thrones) jumps off the screen in a well-constructed story that, while lacking in suspense, does have a surprising resolution. The story is predictable, but the ending is unexpected. It's rather abrupt and unforgiving. 6.5/10
