I really couldn't do anything with this. I like atmosphere sketches and scenes where people don't say anything as long as they feel natural. With this film it was all too artificial. Furthermore a story that I couldn't really follow and therefore lost my interest. In general this was still okay, but I simply couldn't place many endless loose scenes. Every now and then a special shot (that gun in the cinema as mentioned above for example)

The 3D part wasn't all that special either. A long shot yes, but little is done with it and the environments aren't really that great either. Maybe I expected a certain trip, but it never happened. Apart from that there was something wrong with the 3D, or my glasses, but that would be strange because I also had my own glasses with me and the same problem. Blurry images, poorly readable subtitles. But at that point I was already at the point where I didn't care anymore. And that says enough. 1.0*.

A fitting title because this beautifully filmed and at times brilliantly acted psychological drama makes 130 minutes feel like a day. An incredibly drawn-out story of a mysterious man who returns to the place where he spent a summer twenty years ago with an equally mysterious woman. Much acclaimed, but this really tests your patience. If you can sit through the scene with apple, you'll probably make it to the end.

I already read a reference to Wong Kar-Wai here and that made me think of it too. Bi Gan has clearly watched those films, noticeable in the story and the use of colors. But the difference with Kar-Wai is in the atmosphere and what you call the rhythm of the film. That is less successful in Long Day's Journey into Night. It doesn't really stick and it feels a bit forced art house. But fortunately the images are beautiful and several scenes are worth seeing. Although they can't completely save the film unfortunately.
