Maya plot
Gabriel, 30, is a French war reporter who was held hostage in Syria for months. Now he returns to Paris after his release, but can no longer settle there. He then decides to travel to his mother in India in search of reconciliation. There he meets the girl Maya and tries to give meaning to his life.

Well, what should we do with this now? Snotty aunt Hansen-Løve once again with a heartbreaking piece of music. Kitschy nature pictures, syrupy sentiment, unapologetic romance, at one point you can even hear a Barbara Steisand song, I'm not lying. In the Assayas / Hansen-Løve household, the 1960s are still very much alive, which is why the characters in their films keep leaving the Parisian bourgeoisie to produce goat cheese or 'discover themselves' in Goa. Cynical pundits talk about 'Eat, Pray, Love for advanced users', but I don't want to go that far. The images - however idyllic they are - never feel 'empty', but have a certain richness and could be called lively. Hansen-Løve is accurate in her direction, sometimes verging on the soap-like, but is tender towards her characters, which is no longer so obvious in 2019. She treats the main character in particular with a lot of tenderness, in other words the exaggerated 'female gaze' is present again, just like in L'Avenir. The camera fetishizes beau Gosse Roman Kolinka, the ultimate fantasy for rive gauche cougars: an apparently sensitive guy, but also nice and sullen and stoic and unfriendly and all that. With an unkempt beard. Fortunately, his co-star Aarshi Banerjee is a beautiful appearance: spontaneous, witty, sensitive, good cheekbones... in short, a beauty in the classic sense of the word. That's why it's best to consider Maya as a contemporary update of a 50's Hollywood melodrama, a Manckiewicz tearjerker for our empty, pernicious times.
