There are quite a few films in which contradictions in creeds within the family are discussed.

Usually it concerns an Islamic community where a family member gains in-depth knowledge with someone from another religion or where young people want to switch to a Western way of life.

Here we get a look at a family of devoted Jehovah's Witnesses and it has become a beautiful film, also with lived emotions and excellent performances.

Being able to dispose of one's own life is indeed primordial in the existence of a human being, but sometimes that is not so obvious. The four main characters in this "Apostasy" experience this all too well. Each of them bears the suffering in his own way and according to his position in their relationship.

As said, very convincing performances. The eye-catcher is without a doubt Sacha Parkinson, who plays the role of the "renegade" in a movingly beautiful way.

Sisters Alex [Molly Wright] and Luisa [Sacha Parkinson] grow up in a Jehovah's Witness community. The shy Alex leans heavily on her more assertive sister, until she is disowned by mother Ivanna [Siobhan Finneran]. The loss of her sister hits hard and makes Alex question what her calling should be and her relationship with her mother. A nice basic fact, but Kokotajlo portrays the Jehovah's too emphatically as callous religious fanatics and thus forgets to propel the story. The result is a slow, disappointing psychological drama in which only Parkinson brings some life to the mix as the outcast sister.

Well, in itself quite well made and intensely played, but rather exhausted themes by now. I think everyone is now more or less familiar with the sect-like problems of the Jehovah's Witnesses. By the way, Molly Smith has the most adorable face ever. And we still know Finneran from Downton Abbey.
