Les Confins du Monde plot
Robert, a young French soldier, joins his brother Henri in Hanoi (Indochina) in 1945. During an attack by the Japanese, Robert sees Henri and his pregnant wife being executed. Robert wants revenge and joins the French army. But when he meets Mai, a local prostitute, his beliefs and hatred are shaken up.

Pretentious war drama that wants to impress with depth but of which I ultimately understood little to nothing, especially the ending. The setting is Indochina in 1945, where the French do everything they can to not lose their colony. A somewhat vague film about Robert Tassen who wants to take revenge on a Japanese officer who murdered his brother and sister-in-law. In between routines and boredom, he falls in love with a local prostitute. The film loses focus and clings to the main character who has to make a choice between surrendering to his feelings of revenge, or choosing life and staying with that girl ... Don't expect war violence; it is not a "French Platoon"; instead, there are sometimes very gory close-ups of corpses but that is also terribly clumsy to show how inhuman war is. A positive point here is the beautiful photography, shot in Vietnam and with sometimes unreal use of color ... I found it all in all a somewhat boring and vague film that did not convince me, neither in terms of story nor in terms of acting. With also a role for daddy Depardieu.
