In Jamaica in 1973, a boy witnesses the murder of his older brother Jerry. The powerful mob boss King Fox gives him a new home where he grows up. Ten years later, he is sent to London on a mission where he is reunited with his childhood sweetheart Yvonne and daughter. However, the family still has to deal with the past.

Actor Idris Elba (known for the series Luther) first film as a director, entitled Yardie, does not immediately stand out for originality. The story about a young Jamaican in the seventies who loses his brother in a shooting and then ends up in crime himself, we have of course seen many times before in one form or another. The first part, which takes place in Jamaica, is the most interesting because of the beautiful pictures and the well-captured period, and also quite entertaining.
When the story then moves to London, Yardie remains reasonably interesting, but as viewers we find ourselves on very familiar territory. In addition, the acting of the mostly relatively unknown players is almost never convincing.
We are left with a meager crime story that is still good in itself, but hardly excels in anything. Elba's direction and the solid camera work are ultimately Yardie's strongest points, but that does not yield more than a meager pass mark.

In 1973, Jerry Dread [Everaldo Creary] makes a desperate attempt to solve a gang war in Kingstone between King Fox [Sheldon Shepherd] and Skeets [Rayon McLean] with his sound system. It costs him his life, but six years ago the situation had improved. Like many others, Skeets has emigrated to the US and Jerry's younger brother Danny [Aml Ameen] now works for King Fox. As a result of an incident, Danny is sent to London to deliver a package of cocaine to Rico [Stephen Graham]. There he is also reunited with his wife [Shanton Jackson] and his daughter [Myla-Rae Hutchinson-Dunwell]. Of course, things don't go entirely as expected. The prologue is a bit too emphatically inspired by Bob Marley's 'One Love Peace Concert' and the story is certainly not original, but Ameen and Graham in particular are impressive.
