Measure of a Man is set in the 1970s, covers a holiday period, is a coming of age film and has an unmistakable socio-cultural approach. Since director Jim Loach is the son of filmmaker Ken Loach, the latter is not surprising. In the film, Jim Loach shows a differentiated view of interpersonal dynamics and provides the story with a modest amount of social problems. In addition to his protagonist's coming-of-age story, Loach tells in small side plots and with subtle observations about matters that touch on larger social issues. Measure of a Man tells a lot between the lines.

It's an emotional movie. Not a sentimental movie. Slightly melancholy, but not enthusiastic about the nostalgia that is often released when a film is set in a different time period. The quiet voice of the protagonist who heralds the events and sometimes provides commentary and the warm summery images make Measure of a Man a nice, small, heartwarming and serene film about growing up.

A film also with a very convincing leading role by Blake Cooper as Bobby Marks. A fat boy and not a popular boy. But someone who treats it with dignity. He is not self-absorbed, has friends and does not submit to unrealistic dreams. Cooper plays him with a compelling charm and flair. The other characters are also pleasantly filled in, with Donald Sutherland standing out in a small but important supporting role.

Measure of a Man is pleasantly quiet cinema with good acting and a story that has a relaxed cadence and does not pretend to be very special, but that is precisely why it is so fascinating.

Nice film about a teenage boy who spends every summer with his parents and sister in a holiday home. The film is set during the summer of 1976. A somewhat nostalgic and quietly moving coming of age film that is neither too heavy nor too light in tone. A bit predictable at times, but plenty of good scenes.
