Again a very strong film from Flemish soil about one of the biggest scandals in Belgium. I was not yet born at the time and so I certainly did not actively experience it, but I think that with this film Stijn Coninx has managed to sketch a harsh reality of how the victims have been feeling for many years. So it stays very close to the true facts or that's how I felt. Here and there some old images and background information are given to frame everything properly.

The film cuts very hard and anyone who leaves the room after the film will undoubtedly have become silent from this melancholy drama. Do not shoot is based on the book by David Van De Steen, but the leading role is equally reserved for Jan Decleir, who plays the stars of heaven. A beautiful, sometimes somewhat corny soundtrack finally made me give in and let me shed a tear. Yet it was especially the words of Jan Decleir at the end that penetrated very hard and that provided the film with an extra social criticism.

Now Stijn Coninx is not a gifted director, 'Marina' was quite clumsy and 'No Shooting' is technically far from perfect, but the first half of this film is impressive. This is largely due to the unparalleled acting of Jan Decleir and Viviane de Muynck, plus the source material that already gives the film a lot of gravitas and emotion.

Unfortunately, the film changes as soon as Jonas Van Geel makes his appearance in the second hour, because he does not really convince for a moment - Mo Bakker is much better than the young David. At that moment it also becomes clear that Coninx is not able to give a decent ending to the film, both with the tone and the tempo things quickly go wrong.

Think of the fragmentarily structured parliamentary inquiry and his attempt to turn it into an indictment against the system by means of the Hilde de Moor character. The pinnacle of the director's ignorance is the quite pathetic scene with Decleir's 'great' plea towards the end (which also turns out to be fictional, something that the viewer immediately senses). Too bad, the first hour is really gripping.

3.25*

Anyone who has followed the case a bit knows that the investigations into the “Gang van Nijvel” stink on all sides. This film is one big indictment against the authorities, who 40 years later still can't or won't answer the many questions about the murderous gang. I have my doubts about whether the truth will ever come out at all.

Inspired by the autobiographical book by survivor David van de Steen, director Stijn Coninx has made a film about the impact of the robberies on the next of kin, which is reinforced by the nauseating evasive behavior of the authorities. Meanwhile, it goes “Don't shoot. That's my daddy!" to the bone. All things considered, the latter applies to the entire film, which, in addition to its oppressive story, is especially notable for the excellent acting.

Stijn Coninx, who previously stood out for appealing films such as “Daens”, “Sœur Sourire” and “Marina”, has once again delivered a gem.
