A candid quest for Robert van Gulik (1910-1967), for what remained and for people whose lives took a turn after getting to know his universe. Van Gulik is one of the most widely read Dutch writers worldwide. This diplomat, sinologist and scholar became known for his detective novels about the figure of Judge Tie. The novels are in many ways projections of his own life. That duality was also an inspiration for the form in which this quest is cast.
