The famous French writer Romain Gary [Pierre Niney] is in Mexico where his headaches are so bad that he thinks he has a deadly brain tumor. On his way to Mexico City, his wife [Catherine McCormack] reads Romain's autobiographical manuscript entitled 'La Promesse de l'Aube'. In a long flashback, we discover the influence of Romain's mother Nina [Charlotte Gainsbourg] who manages to pick herself up after every setback and promises the anti-Semitic inhabitants of the Polish village of Vilna that her son will become a successful writer. Gainsbourg is excellent in the mother role and Pawel Puchalski offers excellent counterplay as the young Romain. The scene in which he dances a tango solo to cheer up his mother is particularly memorable, but this is a tragicomic historical narrative full of special moments and also a reflection of the treatment of Jews in Poland and France in the 1930s and 1940s. Downright beautiful.

Biopic about writer/director/actor Romain Gary with almost exclusive attention to his often painful relationship with his all-consuming mother (a beautiful role by Charlotte Gainsbourg). The film spends little or no money on his marriages to writer Lesley Blanch and actress Jean Seberg. no attention. Still a pity, I think.

A successful biographical film, different from others, especially lively, which can be watched in one breath.

And, even though the main role is well played, the film has its best moments when the mother, impressively played by Charlotte Gainsbourg, is featured. Fanatically convinced as she is about her son's chances of success, even if it was sometimes clearly not the case (the lieutenantship), she attracts the necessary humor and admiration for her character to the film.

It is nice when the main character expresses his deep regret that his mother was never allowed to experience his successes .

Also very nice lyrics.
"With a mother's love, life in the beginning makes you a promise, which, alas, it will never keep."
