Mwa.

Haunted house horror films can work well for me, as long as they're a little scary. Unfortunately, that's not the case with Satan's Slaves, because Anwar doesn't quite manage to create the suspense. It's nice that he's trying to branch out into many areas of horror as a director, but perhaps he could have focused more on a specific subgenre.

What I can say about the film is that it looks good. Anwar has paid attention to his cinematography, which makes the house look quite spooky. Ideas are definitely mixed in, like a cult shows up halfway through the film. It makes this a pretty complete and rich haunted house film that manages to captivate from start to finish.

Unfortunately, the horror is less successful. Anwar uses the classic build-to-scare formula, but can't quite pull off the payoffs. The scares are distant. The film certainly goes for them, as there are plenty of them. The buildup is decent, though they suffer from the same problem: they can't really pull the viewer along.

Good camerawork and some scarier threats could have been better; for now, it's just a haunted house movie that's easy to watch but doesn't do much more than that. There are plenty of ideas to inject some horror into the mix, but it just doesn't quite come to life. Moreover, the story isn't strong enough to justify a 107-minute runtime.

A decent film with a good look. Attention is paid to color and decoration, but when it comes to the horror itself, a central theme of this film, it doesn't achieve much. The acting is so-so; I just miss a truly scary overall experience. Better jump scares would have done wonders. For now, it's a detached but detailed film.
