Gogol. Nachalo plot
"The Darkest Night Before Dawn"
1829. Nikolay Gogol, a young clerk, is desperate: his own books seem superficial and mediocre, so that he keeps buying full packs of printed copies to burn them all. He suffers from severe seizures and struggles to continue working. Investigator Yakov Guro one day witnesses a vision of Gogol and realizes that it could help him solve crimes.

Watched this film and the two sequels that relate to the work of Nikolai Gogol this weekend. The first part "Nachalo" started with a very strong opening that contained the necessary horror elements. Furthermore, this film had beautiful surrealistic images that depicted the dreams and visions of Gogol. Furthermore, the special effects in this film were very beautiful and that also applies to the beautiful Russian ladies - especially the aristocratic Lisa - who made an appearance in this film. In the third part, these beautiful ladies even got into a sword fight with each other. Well, that was a beautiful sight.
I sometimes had some trouble with the story structure. The dialogues often lasted a bit too long, which took the pace out of the film.
As for those sequels*; they are not on MovieMeter yet but maybe they will be added here soon. That would be nice of course because the first part simply has an open ending that is further elaborated in part 2.
