Truly a masterpiece. I loved it! A post WW I story where the echo of the war continues to reverberate (like the reprobate officer Pradelle). The fairytale-like, sometimes even slightly comical approach forms a good counterbalance to the underlying familial melodrama. The story is told entirely in flashback by Private Maillard, who is being interrogated for unknown reasons.

He tells how he is rescued at the front by another soldier who shortly afterwards lost part of his face in the middle of the battle. He tells how he took care of this poor victim and became his friend. And how they got through the difficult years after the war together through a scam, helped by an orphaned girl who came to live with them. I had the feeling that it was all right. While there are no great insights or messages in the film, it definitely feels like a tribute to those many soldiers who went through untold suffering. Lots of strong images and scenes too. Another gem on Canvas.

The combination of romance, irony and French frivolity reminded me of Jeunet. But I didn't get the same kind of feeling with this movie. Visually very attractive, but with the story I sometimes thought: what is this actually about? Very surprising that this is based on an award-winning novel. Assume it fits a little better.
