After the end of an eleven-year love affair, designer and visual artist Stefan Sagmeister states that he is unhappy. He calls in the help of social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, author of 'The Happiness Hypothesis', a bestseller about the extent to which you can influence your own sense of happiness. This documentary follows Sagmeister over a period of almost five years in which he tests three potential happiness-enhancing substances: meditation, therapy and medication. The experiment resulted in 'The Happy Show', a lecture and exhibition in which Haidt gives physical form to the lessons he has learned through idiosyncratic, peculiar, but always intriguing visual art (in various forms). The result is a film that is as remarkable as it is admirable.
