Fascinating film with a wonderful role by Emilia Clarke who scores high points here. Very strong performance. And I haven't seen Games of Thrones yet. Jack Huston also convinced me in his role as a smooth FBI agent who will do anything to climb the ranks. The story captivated me from beginning to end with a twist that I did not see coming. 7/10

Mwa.

Noyce is a director who has never been quite up my alley. His classic films never really grabbed me, but his more recent crime thriller Above Suspicion also leaves me quite cold. I don't know exactly why I don't like his style, I can't find any recognizable features, but so far it has all remained fairly cold.

What is striking about this film is that quite a bit of effort is made to get it into the tone in which it is set. Grey, gray and gloomy. All the characters have annoying personalities, accents are regularly exaggerated and when it comes to the visuals, there are few sunny images to be seen. In any case, the tone is communicated more than adequately.

Unfortunately, as a viewer I quickly forgot about the world depicted here. Once the film makes clearer leaps to get to the heart of the story, it all starts to become transparent. The fact that many things that are meant seriously are then somewhat exaggerated cannot help matters. By the time the second half arrives, the film doesn't really have anything more to add.

On the other hand, there are some nice tones, a reasonably competent look and acting that can still be put through the wringer. I can't say that the characters don't get into their characters, but I actually thought it all seemed disingenuous. For example, accents that don't quite work out. I get the impression that a lot of names don't really fit their characters.

Although my criticism seems greater, the main thing is that the film was no longer able to really captivate me during the second half. I found the first half hour quite interesting and it was no problem at all to get through. Once the film does pull its cards forward, it quickly becomes less interesting, and that's a shame. Film that I will undoubtedly lose within half a day.

Based on a true story that was made into a film in 1994 under the title Betrayed by Love.

Although the true story took place in Pikeville, Kentucky, much of this film takes place in the Appalachian Mountains of Harlan County, Kentucky. The area is better known as the setting of the FX series Justified. Filming also took place in Paris. Although this place is not very well known, this city was also used for Seabiscuit and Secretariat. This time Jack Huston takes on the role of FBI agent Mark Putnam. The actor from The Longest Ride is also the nephew of Hollywood legend Anjelica Huston. Huston is joined by Emilia Clarke in a wig as Susan Smith. For Brittany O'Grady, this was her film debut.

True stories don't always have to result in good films. “Above Suspicion” is a clear example. Unfortunately, the film did not fully hold my attention and it all seems a bit slow. On the other hand, it's not exactly bad either. This is partly thanks to the performance of Emilia Clarke with a great Kentucky accent. Towards the end we see the real Mark Putnam appear on screen, and briefly tells his story about the murder of Susan Smith. Fairly entertaining for fans of true stories.

2.5 *
