Oof.

Went in blank actually, the only reason I was watching this was because of Lily James. Still one of the nicer and better actresses to look at these days. She is therefore one of the few bright spots in this film.

I also forgot that this was directed by Newell, I found his classic Four Weddings and a Funeral unbearable. And when I saw this humor again sometimes, I immediately had to think about how bad my experience with that film was.

Anyway, I'm not fond of this kind of British humor. Also that eternally exaggerated "OH WONDERFUL" on favors I'm a bit fed up with. James doesn't manage to save the film with that, and Huisman doesn't impress enough for this film either.

The war has not been portrayed well enough, so that it has virtually no impact. In addition, the romance and friendship are built up sloppily, which is remarkable for an experienced director. Not a single spark between James and Huisman, friendship between James and that child was suddenly very strong after 1 time.

In addition, the camera work is boring and the use of colors is not too special. The locations are very successful and well portrayed. The final phase has 0 impact on me. Mainly because it was too much of a good thing. Findlay being arrested after helping a child, and also dying after helping a child is very "good".

It does not help that Newell makes his film nowhere but a little human or credible. The only human thing is the relationship between James and Powell. It's always so obvious that a character is "good" or "bad".

Not good in the end so, too bad, because James is always a nice actress.

The film has a premise that is tailor-made for me. Add to that the cute Lily James and you have a film that can do little wrong (you might say). The unusual island and its inhabitants are intriguing and the story is well pushed forward by Lily James' quest for her character.

Newell should have focused a little more on this one, as the unbalanced side plot with her mainland England fiancee feels a bit dragged in. Huisman is doing okay and you hardly notice that he is Dutch. That subcutaneous attraction between him and James, however, could have been deepened a bit more. If Newell had focused a little more on this and left out the entire engaged side plot, the ending of the movie would have been a bit stronger and more believable.

It is a pity. Could have been more, but the plot is a bit of a mess.

Oh, after reading the book (yes it's a BOOK FILM), I was looking forward to the film adaptation, but I also held my breath; because how do you film such an extremely original written book?

In my opinion, the original book and the movie are quite separated and the director and screenwriters have taken quite a bit of liberties with a lot of their own invented twist, dropping many characters (where has Sophie gone, Susan Scott, Remy, Billee Bee Jones? , Gilly Gilbert, the Oscar Wilde letter plot?) and added completely new events. It flattens the story quite a bit and therefore the film is much less interesting than the book.

In the book, Juliet is a lively, quirky free-spirited character with humor that says it all. Sydney doesn't come out as vividly in the film as in the book either. That goes for all characters, by the way, they stay so flat. The film does not follow the order of the book, which - if you have read the book first - causes a lot of confusion. It doesn't feel logical and big bites have been taken from the original story.

It's not all doom and gloom, I'm positive too! Because it's a great movie! I had a great time with it. It's definitely worth watching if you haven't read the book yet. Just not that special. And that's a shame because the book is special in that respect. Ai, perhaps a missed opportunity, because it really could have been a quirky special film.

I would recommend everyone to pick up the book and read it, because there the story has so much more depth, more lively (and above all more peculiar) characters and a different focus and plot. To do
