Panfilov's 28 seems to be a real legend that is taught even in Russian education. Opinions are divided on whether it ever actually took place. In any case, this work would serve to bring Russian cinema back to the forefront. It's a decent effort because the cinematography is beautiful. Wintry landscapes of snow in which war machines do their thing. Beautiful wide shots of these breathtaking landscapes are taken here and there. It is all well portrayed, but in the end it says little because the whole remains quite distant. In the first 45 minutes the preparations are made and a number of Russian troops are introduced. Their somewhat unusual names also make it difficult to know who is who. In the end it doesn't matter much because it's not really a war drama but it's war in full action. Entertaining, but nothing more than that. Small 3.5*

Indeed an entertaining war account of the Battle of Moscow but unfortunately not based on facts. Pure propaganda actually if we this are to be believed. The Battle of Moscow was part of the Operation Tafun that ended with a German defeat. This was not only because of the courage of the Russian soldiers, but also because of the extremely harsh winter that set in at the beginning of December and which the German army was not prepared for at all. The German soldiers were not dressed at all for extremely low temperatures and the German vehicles and guns also failed because the lubricating oil the Germans used for them could not withstand those temperatures well below freezing.

So much for a piece of history about the Battle of Moscow, which, because of the Russian victory, was actually the turning point for the German army that would never get hold of Moscow and of which it soon became clear that they would no longer be able to win the war.

3.5*

After great curiosity saw the film on YT with English subtitles. And it soon becomes apparent that the film has two sides, one very good and one mediocre.

The good: The movie looks fabulously beautiful. Fantastic landscapes with cinematic shots, the setting sun, the cannons set up against an azure sky, beautiful color filters. cinematographically the film is truly of great beauty. For example, when the commander addresses his troops in the moonlight.

The war part is also more than fine. It looks damn real and beautiful. The weapons, the vehicles, the uniforms, really beautiful. But other things are also correct, such as practicing with a fake tank, the construction of fake trenches and later the image of the command structure, or, for example, the spotter and his radioman communicating with the battery. One thing, however, in the war part, the ease with which those Germans allow themselves to be slaughtered is borderline, and the constant sending of new tanks when one has clearly run into a strong line is also too much for me. I don't think this will happen anytime soon.

The mediocre part: the characters remain very flat and one-dimensional. There is little depth and dialogue, or that should not come out well in the English subtitles. In other words, the film is very flat in terms of depth, characters and story and that is very disappointing to me because this is a Russian production and if the story Panfilov is indeed such a legend, then they didn't really think it was worth giving it a little more cachet . Too bad in that case.

Fantastic-looking war film, a feast for the eyes, but otherwise a flat event with little depth. Missed opportunity as far as I'm concerned.
