Im außermoralischen Sinne
…or what popped into my head while watching.

We think we understand 'crime', that we know the motives of those who fall into crime, that human nature can be neatly divided into the bulk (the so-called good-natured) and a few abject others. Nothing could be further from the truth, of course. 'Good Time' shows that even those who are dismissed as scum have complex motives, and can do bad out of a desire to realize good for their loved ones.

After all, what emerges in this portrait of underprivileged backgrounds is heartwarming selflessness (a poor woman doesn't leave a poor wretch out in the cold), loyalty (the girl who doesn't want to betray Connie[/ spoiler]), commitment (euhm…bro's before ho's?) and family warmth (who doesn't talk about their mother or grandmother all the time?) – in short, norms and values that are anything but reprehensible. That evil in certain circumstances amounts to a deformation of the good, whereby the intentions do indeed arise from an ethical reflex: it is what the film beautifully reveals.

Hannah Arendt beta version, you say? Or Friedrich Nietzsche revisited 'beyond morality'?

Furthermore, 'Good Time' is a remarkable and precisely because of that a very stimulating experience. The basic idea is tragic-dramatic, but directors Benny Safdie and Josh Safdie mix suspense and humor through it, until the film becomes an atypical cocktail of emotion, tension and hilarity. Quite unique (even down to the level of the soundtrack), and so highly recommended.

3.5*

Despite all the bizarre twists, the whole feels realistic and believable, great film with a fantastic soundtrack.
