When the Roman Emperor Nero decides to persecute the Christians, he is opposed by Marcus Superbus, who is in love with the Christian Mercia. Nero, under the influence of his wife, has Mercia arrested. Marcus asks for a pardon, but she can only be released if she renounces her faith.
