Happy Hunting plot

"Run for your life."

Warren Novak is the type of person who starts his morning with a bowl of cornflakes in his whiskey. Life hasn't given him a smile for years and now he has all the more reason to drink his problems away. The day he discovers he is a father, he accidentally shoots two drug dealers into the grave, leaving the rest of the gang on his tail. After a hellish chase, he ends up in the picturesque village of Bedford Flats, whose only activity is the annual bison hunt. However, it has been several decades since a bison was seen there. The locals have found a nice alternative to this.

The 'horror' classification is an exaggeration. Thriller is, I think, better.

The story is quite down to earth. No double meaning or disguised messages. Just a number of residents of a village hunting for some passers-by. The tension is in the game. And that works. The hunter and the hunted. A great atmosphere is created. A bit surreal, but also with a dormant tension.

The film has a grimy and dreary look. The locations, the gloomy use of color and the unkempt and often silent characters are mainly responsible for this. It's all certainly atmospheric.

Beautiful locations. A run-down and gray village filled with inbred residents. The latter always has a somewhat uncanny connotation. Here also. There is also a lot of desert landscape. Dry and barren with little color. These are atmospheric details.

Both hunters and the hunted are little more than faces. Ok, there is some background available for each character, but it does not go far and is not very in depth. It fits in with the down to earth character of the film, which is averse to too much unnecessary information.

So no horror. During the killing, some blood is released and we hear sloppy sounds. There are a few visual effects, which may cause minor excitement, but much of it is evocative. Little budget was spent on effects. Down to earth, you know.

Nice thriller.

A concept that has already been filmed several times and often better. Here the focus is too much on exaggerated caricatures without any tension or cool bloody scenes. There is little mention of horror. The acting is weak and the story has no interesting progression. A film that is best missed. 3/10

Directors Joe Dietsch and Louie Gibson joined forces for this film and seem to be opening the collaboration for the time being. They make for quite an interesting duo, especially since Happy Hunting is not badly directed at all. The film was shot in various deserts and dry areas within California, ideal for a horror western of course. This results in enough images that look away from the cinematographically above average, something that is reinforced by the clear camera work. Unfortunately, things go wrong when it comes to the rougher and more exciting scenes. The somewhat hastily put together computer effects and chaotic editing do not exactly preserve the intensity. In addition, Happy Hunting is a fairly tame film in terms of gore and bloodshed. Some gunshot wounds are inserted with mediocre CGI and that is the horror fun that you as a viewer should get from this film, but certainly with this concept and the beautiful locations there could have been much more (including in that area). Still, you notice the enthusiasm of the two gentlemen, so I certainly expect another expertly directed film in the future.
