Lancelot du Lac plot

The story is set after the Knights of the Round Table fail in their quest for the Holy Grail. Defeated, they return to Camelot. They feel that they have been rejected by God Himself, begin to doubt themselves and turn against each other. In particular, between Lancelot and Mordred, a discord arises. Arthur makes an effort to convince his knights to reconcile their differences. Little does he know that Lancelot is having an affair with his queen, Guinevere. Lancelot is torn between his duty to the king and his love for the queen. Mordred, however, is determined to destroy the unfaithful Lancelot.

Wonderful to finally see one of the Arthurian myths not presented as a full-out action film.

Admittedly, Bresson is also a very extreme opposite of that, but that makes it extremely refreshing.

The sober approach does not mean that the film does not look good, but a tournament is presented here in such a way that we mainly see the legs of the horses and the falling riders and not the action that takes place above them.

Bresson also opts for an already gloomy affair, how things went for the knights after the failed quest for the Holy Grail.

Merlin is already dead, most of the knights of the round table are already dead and what remains has little faith and trust in each other.

And probably the only knight film where the clashing of all those armor can clearly be heard on the soundtrack.

The combination of a film about Lancelot and Bresson's direction sounds very interesting on paper. Bresson often knows how to put his own twist on stories through his minimalist approach and that approach often works exceptionally well.

Bresson clearly opts for the minimalist approach again here and tries to paint a picture of the sad life of some of the knights of the round table who still remain. The pace is slow and the emphasis is not on action, but on the characters. Bresson also plays with the sounds of armor and swords and incorporates this into the film in an original way. However, on the other hand, I found the story itself less interesting. I didn't think the minimalist way of acting really worked well here. No, the acting is even particularly bad. They may have been amateurs who were used for this, but that is clearly noticeable.

The ending and especially the last scene is particularly good. But overall it was a bit disappointing. I usually appreciate Bresson, but here it doesn't really shine, although his original approach to a story like this is still to be commended.

2.5*
