Daemonium: Underground Soldier plot

"Soldier of the Underworld"

In an alternate universe, magic and technology coexist with humans and demons. A powerful family uses a band of mercenaries to force sorcerer-swindler Fulcanelli to summon a demon to make them even more powerful than they already are. Of course it goes wrong. Fulcanelli runs away and the mercenaries are slaughtered except for one man. Razor makes a deal with the demon and transforms into lord and master of the criminal underworld. In response, the family kidnaps his pregnant wife Lisa. They brainwash her and turn her into a merciless battle machine and the spearhead of their offensive against Razor. But his ex-wife is not his only concern. It's only a matter of time before the demon returns and drags Razor into its infernal dimension. The only one who can apparently do something about it is Fulcanelli and he has Razor's killer robots after him.

I thought a film in Spanish, that could be a surprise!

the makers have made a film that really makes no sense!

the characters are very weak, the story is paper thin, a lot of attention has been paid to make the film as gruesome as possible!

that is the only thing they have succeeded in!

worthless!

Great of course.

An Argentinian Sushi Typhoon film, an impossible blend of action, horror, sci-fi and fantasy that I did not immediately see coming. Pablo Parés is apparently known as the godfather of Argentine genre film, but I just didn't know enough about Argentine cinema to appreciate the value of such a title.

Still not by the way, but at least the title is well deserved. The film looks slightly less cheap than its Japanese counterparts, but in the end I also found it slightly less disturbed. What makes this so strong is that no corners have been cut off anywhere. Every character, every monster looks unique and looks like there is an interesting backstory behind it. Even the clock ticking backwards is an interesting and creative prop.

Parés also worked on it for a long time, so this film follows from a small web series of short films. But there is little noticeable difference. A two-hour long spectacle of horror craziness with quite a few Japanese influences, without being a straight copy of the Sushi Typhoon stable.

Recommended for enthusiasts, it is far too niche to appeal to a large audience, but otherwise absolutely worth it.

4* and a extensive review

Director Pablo Parés shows a lot of love and passion for his concepts, but the cinematic qualities (and budget) to support such a colossally extensive narrative are lacking. A truly enormous arsenal of characters is introduced, all of whom have their own gifts, but few of them are really cool. Even with so many unique features, it was hard to cheer for anything. However, this is also partly caused by the messy scenario, where there are basically two opposing sides but neither of them really constitutes a "good side". It also doesn't help that members regularly defect from camp to camp, further amplifying the chaotic build-up. A flood of corny Asian influences, wooden effects and childish costumes complete the final course, but it must be admitted that the final phase shows a lot of potential and the special pace of the story makes it no task to sit through Daemonium. Caro Angus plays 4 different characters in total and is the winner of the film in terms of acting strength. The loser is clearly Dany Casco, where his character, with no demonstrable gift and only the ability to shoot others in the head at close range, has seriously managed to become the leader of a group of demons. I was perplexed, but ultimately a film with such enormous enthusiasm is somehow fun to see.
